Stamped “Lowendahl’s” on the player side of the handle, and “Joachim *illegible from wear* Bow IV” on the right, this 19th century German bow features fully lined silver mounts and lapping. (Read below for information on Lowendahl.) Joachim alludes to Josef Joachim, a violinist readily recognized for collaborating with Johannes Brahms, and for whom the composer’s infamous concerto was written. Joachim sponsored several competitions for young and underprivileged virtuosi, for which famous makers supplied prize equipment – this bow is likely one such example. The head, in the style of Knopf, one of Lowendahl’s two major teachers.
