About the Instrument

This violin has a warm tonal quality, powerful yet clear. Its rich apricot varnish is applied on a wheat ground to highlight the unique and beautiful wide flames on its solid back. The maker thoughtfully antiqued this instrument to honor the luthier whose work inspired this violin: the early-20th century Italian craftsman Ferdinando Garimberti.

Interior contains two labels. One reads: “Ferndinando Garimberti / in MILANO A. 1946” beside Garimberti’s brand. The other label reads: “Giorgio Grisales fecit in / Cremonae Anno Domini 2009”

Length: 358 mm

About the Maker

Giorgio (Jorge Humberto) Grisales (1963-) was born in Colombia and moved to Cremona, Italy in the 1980s to study at the International School of Violinmaking under Giorgio Ce. In 1988, through the International School of Cremona, Grisales graduated as Master Luthier and obtained a Bowmaker diploma through a course organized by the Regione Lombardia. Grisales soon earned a diploma from Civic School of Violinmaking in Milan as Restorer of Instruments. In 1990, Grisales opened his luthier shop in Cremona with a particular appreciation and close studies of Italian masters, such as Ferdinando Garimberti and Giuseppe instruments (this violin is the former). Grisales’ masterful instrument making is well-known worldwide, and he became the President of the Consorzio Liutai di Cremona in 2016. As with the craftsmen of the past, the legacy of the Grisales stringed instruments has become a family venture, with Grisales’ son and nephew joining the Cremona workshop.
